“Your Screenplay Sucks”

akers-theater1A special screenwriting seminar led by Will Akers, lifetime member of WGA, produced scriptwriter, published author and University teacher.  An abridged version of his European event, Will covers the essentials you need to know to make sure your screenplay doesn’t suck.  He presents insights and lessons learned having written for actors, producers, television series and film studios.  This event, named after his iconic book, offers a full day of learning for Virginia’s accomplished and aspiring screenwriters, covering such topics as “There is No Method,” “Best Word Last,” “Discover Your Theme Partway Through,” “The Epoxy Theory” “French Rubber Stamp.” & “Why You Must Write Every Lead Character for Angelina Jolie.”

Choose either:
– the July 9th Norfolk Venue at WHRO-TV from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM or
-the July 10th Richmond Venue at BES STUDIOS fro 12:30 Pm to 8:30 PM
It is the same seminar at both locations.

Editing Writing for Emotional Impact

Robin FarmerRobin Farmer will moderate a James River Writers panel on “Editing Writing for Emotional Impact Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 6:45 p.m. at the Firehouse Theatre, 1609 W. Broad Street (parking available in the Lowe’s parking lot across the street).

Panelists will discuss strategies for revising your work to tap into emotions to move your readers!

VSF – April 22nd Screenplay Critique


We are having a screenplay critique on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Our two APRIL writers are Bill Brock and Suzy Smithson.

Contact us if you are planning to attend, as space can sometimes be limited. New aspiring or seasoned writers are always welcome to sit in with us as our guest for up to three (3) monthly meetings.

The Virginia Screenwriters Forum’s meetings are held, on the Third Floor North Education Center at the Dominion Arts Center (formerly Richmond Centerstage), 600 East Grace Street, Richmond, Virginia.
PLEASE NOTE: Please try to arrive by 9:00 am. Our meeting will start at 9:15 am.

VSF members in the news

Congratulations to our members who have placed in the first contests results of 2016!

Jeff Thomas for his quarterfinal showing in the prestigious American Zoetrope screenwriting contest, for his comedy CudaBonnie Eaton for her quarterfinal placement in the 2,000-script Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship, for her script, Father RennieBrian Weakland for the quarterfinals in Screencraft, for his psychological thriller, Crazy Woman.  Screencraft semis will be announced in two weeks.

And a final shout-out and good luck wishes to our director, Eric Carlson.  His The Audition is an Official Selection in the Richmond International Film Festival.  Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Sunday, March 10.

The French Apartment

The French Apartment is a new play by Helene Wagner.
A staged reading was held on May 23, 2015 at Centerstage in Richmond Virginia.
